STORYTELLING FOR PUPILS IN LOCKS HEATH

Tuesday 27th January 2009

Schoolchildren from across Locks Heath will be taking part in National Storytelling Week 2009, thanks to Kebbell Homes. On 2nd February, pupils from Lockswood Pre School and St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School will visit Lockswood Library to watch and listen to stories read by professional storytellers from creative arts company, Orange Apples.

The event has been funded by a donation from house builder Kebbell Homes, which has been building new homes in the area since the mid 90s and currently has nine homes for sale at its Heathland Gardens development in nearby Stillmeadows, off Grovebury. Gin Roaf at Kebbell Homes says, “We believe it is very important to get involved with the communities in which we build and this is a great opportunity for local children to develop their listening and reading skills. After all, a story is the traditional medium of communication from generation to generation and can also be a source of great fun.”

Jackie Lewis, Children’s and Young People’s Librarian at Hampshire County Council, comments, “We are delighted to be hosting such an exciting event at Lockswood Library as part of National Storytelling Week. We're sure that the children who visit will be inspired to come back with their families and make use of the vast range of free resources that our friendly library service can offer to the local community."

Established in 2000, National Storytelling Week aims to increase public awareness of the art, practice and value of oral storytelling, the oldest art form in the world. There are hundreds of events held throughout the country during the week for those who appreciate the creativity of imagination and participation is encouraged from all areas of the community. Further storytelling sessions are being held throughout the day for the general public and library customers with children aged 4-7. Places are limited, so please contact the library on 01489 583729 for a free ticket.
